Hear from Robert Dickie, the President of the Chartered Banker Institute as he shares the journey and outcomes of professionalising the UK banking industry by introducing globally recognised professional certifications.

Founded in 1875 in Edinburgh, the Chartered Banker Institute is the oldest institute of bankers in the world with 30,000 members and a similar number of individuals holding qualifications awarded or accredited by the Institute. The Chartered Banker Institute’s aim is to enhance and sustain professionalism in banking, working with banks and bankers to raise pride in our colleagues’ professionalism, and contribute to rebuilding trustworthiness in our banks, bankers and banking system.

Joining Robert will be Cris Parker, CEO of The Banking and Finance Oath. The Banking and Finance Oath Limited is an independent not-for-profit organisation whose purpose is to improve our society by raising the moral and ethical standards of the Banking and Finance industry through the implementation of the Banking and Finance Oath (The BFO).

Robert Dickie

Robert Dickie
Chartered Banker Institute

Robert Dickie started his career with Clydesdale Bank in Hamilton, Scotland and following the takeover by National Australia Bank held various senior positions with NAB Group in both Australia and the UK. From 2000 to 2002, he served as Managing Director, UK Enterprise, for Zurich in the UK. From 2003-2008 Robert was Group Operations Director and a member of the executive committee of UK-based bank Bradford & Bingley plc. In 2008 he joined American International Group, Inc. (AIG) in New York where he served as Chief Operations.

He joined Zurich in March 2014 as Chief Operations and Technology Officer and a member of the Group Executive Committee (GEC), where he is responsible for Zurich’s global IT, operations shared services, property, procurement and sourcing as well as operational transformation initiatives. Robert is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers in Scotland and a fellow of the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce. Robert holds an MBA from the University of Strathclyde Graduate Business School, Glasgow, Scotland.

Cris Parker
Banking and Finance Oath

Cris has had a career that has been based on communication; relaying people’s stories and building relationships that lead to better things. Starting her career in the theatre, Cris founded The Peccadillo Theatre Company in Manhattan’s Lower Eastside (now Off-Broadway). On returning to Australia, Cris was the Founder of Brownslane Productions, a production company that produced creative documentaries which explored people, their fascinating stories and experiences, and their contributions to a better society.

In 2011, after completing a Social Science and applied psychology degree Cris started working for The Ethics Centre, contributing to social impact projects that continue to thrive today. These initiatives seek to place ethics at the centre of public life – as a shared impulse to live with purpose in line with values and principles.  

Cris has worked on The Banking and Finance Oath for the last 4 years and spends much of her time having conversations with people about the impact of behaviour on their culture, the importance of ethics and integrity and the continuous work in maintaining high ethical standards in financial services.
