The First Word

Welcome to the December edition of The Standard.

As we come to the end of the year and look forward to Christmas and the summer holidays, we are reflecting on the fact FINSIA has made 20 submissions on behalf of members during 2018.

That’s as many as the total for the preceding five years, which shows the sheer scale of upheaval and scrutiny on the banking and financial services sector in Australasia.

While much of the attention has been on the Royal Commission, that is just a fraction of what has been going on in our industry as everyone of you will already be well aware.

Most of our submissions have been to the recently formed Financial Adviser Standards and Ethics Authority, though we have also provided commentary and suggestions for the Productivity Commission and ASX’s corporate governance council to name just a few.

Elsewhere in this edition, we have a report from our latest webinar where we focused on the final week of Commissioner Kenneth Hayne’s long-running examination of misconduct. The digital format is a platform we will be using more during 2019 after our first two successful events.

With the future in mind, take a look at our report on an initiative aimed at giving kids a better understanding of the fundamental skills they need to understand and manage their own finances.

Finally, let us wish you a festive Christmas with some housekeeping. FINSIA will be closed from Monday 24 December 2018 at 1:00pm and will re-open Wednesday 2 January 2019 at 9:00am.
