How has your association FINSIA contributed to your development over your career?
Joining the FINSIA network has been a huge impact for my career development. It has unlocked amazing opportunities and connections in the financial services industry.
One of the most significant benefits has been the expansion of my professional network. I've met some incredible people, including professionals at similar stages in their careers, as well as senior leaders who have been invaluable sources of guidance and inspiration.
I can't stress enough the importance of building your professional network early on, and FINSIA provides the perfect platform to make it happen.
Tell us about your career to date?
I landed my first job straight out of university, and I've been at the same business advisory firm, FTI Consulting, for the past 13 years.
It all began in London, when I first stepped foot into FTI Consulting as a fresh-faced graduate. I never imagined that this job would take me on such an incredible journey. Throughout my time here, I have specialised in helping companies effectively communicate with their diverse stakeholders, with a specific focus on investor and media relations.
I have been fortunate to work with listed companies, providing them with advice on their communication strategies, navigating both the challenges and opportunities that come their way. I’ve been able to witness firsthand the power of effective communication in building relationships and driving positive outcomes.
After gaining a few years of experience under my belt, I received an opportunity to transfer within the firm. So, I packed my bags and hopped on a plane to our Perth office in Australia. Little did I know that this move would keep me in the land Down Under for nine years and still continuing.
We've read your title, now tell us how you would describe what you ACTUALLY do to a friend at a BBQ?
This is always a tricky one, and my mum still struggles grasping it at times! I help companies to effectively communicate what they do in a clear way, ensuring it’s easily understood and captures the attention of the right audience. This involves a diverse range of stakeholders, including investors, the financial market, employees, and the media. And no, there’s no magic wand to this! It’s about relying on communication strategies to achieve business goals.
What led you to pursue your career path in the first place and can you remember where and when the lightbulb came on?
The memory is still fresh in my mind. Just before finishing high school, I found myself grappling with the common dilemma of what to pursue in university, unsure of which direction to take.
It was during this time that my father, offering his wise counsel, suggested, "Well, you've always loved communicating, so why not explore the world of public relations?"
Taking his advice, I embarked on the journey. I made the move to the bustling city of London and pursued a degree in public relations. I then realised the importance of broadening my skillset and strengthening my financial knowledge, leading me to studies in applied finance.
So far, it’s a journey that has taught me the incredible power of effective communication, and its intersection with the world of finance.
In hindsight, what is the one thing you would have done differently in getting to where you are now?
Looking back, I shouldn't have been so hard on myself after certain situations, dwelling on mistakes made, as it’s what you learn from those experiences that makes the difference, and is an opportunity for growth.
We’re also constantly caught up in the whirlwind of life rushing from one thing to the next. It's so easy to forget to pause and reflect on the lessons learned and the successes we've had along the way. If I could turn back time, I would have made it a priority to take a moment each day to properly soak in those learnings and small victories.
Who is your most influential or inspirational professional influence and why?
I've been fortunate to have had outstanding managers throughout my career. They were not only exceptional professionals, but also team players who nurtured a positive culture for collaboration and growth. I have to thank each and every one of them for the invaluable lessons they taught me.
What is your UN advisory role regarding climate and sustainability?
As part of my involvement in ESG initiatives, I lead the communications officer role for the United Nations Environment Committee in Western Australia.
It's a voluntary position where I connect with professionals who share an interest in promoting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in our state. Specifically, I focus on developing and executing communication strategies and initiatives that engage industry, businesses, local government, and the general public in advancing the SDGs.
