Osman Ahmed has worked in financial services for a decade, starting his career at Westpac, then working in various businesses before coming full circle to work for the big four bank again in his current position.
Osman spent seven years working for Macquarie Group, including its asset finance business, during the period in which Macquarie acquired Esanda’s $8.2 billion dealer finance book from ANZ in 2016.
“A few years later I moved into a product management role in Macquarie’s mortgages business at a time when there was significant investment into building capability and ways of working. So, it was a great time to be part of the business, when there was considerable emphasis on experimenting with technology,” he says.
Osman subsequently moved into a risk management and compliance role focused specifically on mortgage products. “I was approached to take on a product risk management role,” he explains.
This position encompassed considerable responsibility, including working on regulatory engagements. He subsequently accepted a similar position in the Westpac group in the RAMS Home Loans business, where he is still employed.
“I'm the senior product risk manager for RAMS mortgages and report to the head of products. I have end-to-end responsibility for managing non-financial risk aspects related to RAMS’ mortgages.”
Osman says he particularly enjoys being part of a smaller business inside a large corporate. “It means I have considerable autonomy and there’s lots of variety in my work. I have a great team, and I have been able to implement many exciting initiatives in a short space of time.”
As a new FINSIA member, Osman is looking forward to expanding his peer network outside his existing sphere. “Many of the networking activities and events I have attended have been internal and joining FINSIA allows me to expand my horizons. I am also looking forward to contributing to the industry from my field of expertise.”
He says being part of FINSIA will give him a good understanding about the potential career pathways available to him in the future. “I’m keen to learn more about the implicit and explicit skill sets required for different roles,” he says.
Outside work, you will often find Osman enjoying the great outdoors. “I’m into hiking and water sports like surfing and paddleboarding. My dog Peggy and I love going on difficult hikes. I’ll find any excuse I can to be outdoors.”
